My last art show for a while.

If you're interested in velvet painting, tattoos, pop culture, and drinks- I'm having another art show at the Mini Bar in SF on Divisadero. The opening is Thursday, December 19, 2013 6-11PM My velvet portraits will be sold for a very affordable price. I'm still in the ongoing throes of home improvement, and, painting velvet, ain't nobody got time for that. I get my art-soul filled at work, tattooing at Sacred Rose Tattoo in Berkeley, CA.

My ikea Hack

Referring back to MY IKEA HACK I'd conquered the ugly ikea sofa fabric/color quandry. Since that post I've gotten a new couch, another dog, and a new job. To answer some of the more prominent comments, No, I will not offer to sew a cover like this for anyone, ever. I'm NOT an upholsterer nor am I amazing in any way with a sewing machine. It took me about 12 HOURS to sew. Honestly, I would recommend that if you want a slip-cover made, leave it to a professional. If I were to sew another, I'd expect to be paid about $3000. Yes, it's that frusterating and time-consuming. Measuring, remeasuring, and then cutting, then serging the edges, then sewing them together... Then, velcro, ect. I used upolstry nails to keep the back in place, and would remove them to wash it. The nails looked pretty. Anyway, I'm not going to be all "high and mighty" with this ikea thing. I know the company has a huge fan base. But the reasons I made the slipcover were because this sofa is butt-ugly. No bones about it, It's the ugly sofa that no amount of cute throw pillows will make it look the least bit cozy. I think of it as horrid rendition of Brutalist architecture. Additionally, this ikea sofa is NOT the most comfy sofa I've ever sat on, and to be honest doesn't really stand up to the beating that the company claims. The seat cushions sag after about a year, the backrest cushions have almost no give, and the fabric could also be used to exfoliate the skin of pirates and most sun worshippers. The extra storage is nice, but the pull-out bed feature could easily compare to a prison mattress. I'd rather put my in-laws up in the local hotel than put them through the torture of that make-do mattress. Did my taste change? Maybe. Slip covers should be an option for ANY sofa available on the market. To be fair, I have a love/hate relationship with ikea's products, and am continuing my year-long hiatus from shopping there for anything. I'm looking towaqrd pure quality these days.

More work on the house

Last week we started painting the trim on the house.

A 3' deep trench has been dug along the South side of our house to divert rain water away from our foundation.

(beginning the project)

The puppy has also helped dig!!!

Hit the deck!

We pressure washed the deck, removed the old gross wood on the deck, sanded it, and I meticulously oiled the wood with Brazilian rose wood oil. It's gorgeous. I love the smell. The neighbors took our cues and they're doing their deck now, too!
Below are photos of late-night work.

You can see the pretty happy wood now!

More work!

Dryrot removal. We ended up having to remove the entire windowsill. We replaced it, primer and painted it. Same went for the bedroom window and the diningroom window.
Before:

After:

We're waiting for a new sash to be built to replace the rotted one. I've already prime and painted all of the parts in anticipation of it's arrival.
I've also began to scrape all the old paint off the sills and prime & painted those as well.
